Beyond a Joke is an exploration of the fringe comedy scene in Melbourne and it gets under the skin of young comics trying to fathom what motivates them to stand on stage armed with nothing but a microphone and some well prepared jokes.
The film is a very honest and forthright look at the characters that dwell in the slightly seedy world of the amateur comedy circuit. Our subjects are people who do not make a living from comedy, but who aspire to. You will not see any famous faces featured but you will meet some remarkable individuals who are very driven, politically aware and in some cases extremely talented. They are all chasing an elusive dream, even if some of them unsure of what the dream is. This is the underpinning theme of the film.
